Day07

Cultural sightseeing in Kathmandu

Today, we will explore the top tourist attractions in the Kathmandu Valley, including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and Bouddhanath. These locations are all listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Drive to Swayambhunath Stupa

After breakfast, we will drive to Swayambhunath Stupa. Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as Monkey Temple, is one of Nepal’s largest and most ancient Stupas, situated atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley. As you ascend to the stupa, you will smell burning incense and hear flags waving & prayer wheels rotating.

Two Buddhist monasteries and a temple dedicated to Haratima, which Buddhists and Hindus worship, are also located within the stupa. You will witness large numbers of monkeys roaming around the stupa, and if you want to capture them on camera, you might even get some natural poses from them. Also, the panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley is worth watching and capturing. Looking over the dome-shaped stupa, it feels like it is in a photography pose.

Drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square

After enjoying the moments at Swayambhunath Stupa, we head towards the Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Basantapur Durbar Square or Hanuman Dhoka. This is one of the three most visited Durbar squares in the Kathmandu Valley. If you are fortunate, you can glimpse Kumari, the well-known living goddess of Nepal. The Newari architecture here reflects the Malla and Shah Dynasties.

While you are strolling around Durbar Square, you can photograph the historic pagoda-styled temples, monuments, statues, and everyday life, seeing around selling souvenirs, carrying luggage, and more.

Drive to Bouddhanath Stupa

In the afternoon, we will visit another of the oldest stupas, Bouddhanath Stupa, a giant whitewashed-dome structure built in the 5th AD. The stupa is surrounded by Buddhist monasteries and lamas, making it one of the largest in the world. Thousands of Tibetan Buddhists visit Bouddhanath in the winter to pay their respects.

It sits atop three terraces and, when viewed from above, resembles a lotus blossom, which is still sacred by all pious Buddhists worldwide. Furthermore, the Buddha’s four pairs of eyes are a striking representation of the four cardinal directions, which represent the careful observation of people and their daily and night obligations.

Drive to Pashupatinath Temple

In the evening, we will visit the Pashupatinath Temple, one of the oldest and most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to the Hindu Lord Shiva. The main temple features four entrances facing each direction and is built in the pagoda style. In front of the western entryway is a prominent bronze figure of Nandi. On this site, there are 518 temples and monuments. Only Hindus are allowed inside the main temple.

The vibe, energy, and crowd of devotees are worth watching and capturing with the camera. There may probably be some sadhus living close to the temple you will encounter on the way. Some of these devout ascetics may allow you to take their pictures. However, certain sadhus could request a modest tip for every picture.

One of the main attractions is the evening arati, which is held here every day at the same time. You can enjoy that sandhya aarti, and we will return to the hotel later.

Overnight at Kathmandu.
